As lithium ions are intercalated into the graphite electrode, they expand and contract as the lithium ions are deintercalated from the graphite.
Swelling: If graphite (about 10%), silicon (about 300%), and silicon oxide (about 30%) are repeated, the physical damage of the electrode, electrolyte depletion such as SEI film control, and contact resistance between particles increase, resulting in an increase in ohmic resistance of the electrode, which degrades battery characteristics. These problems are caused by poor mechanical stability of the electrodes, which can be solved by the use of appropriate binders.

As a binder, an SBR/CMC-based polymeric binder is widely used in the secondary battery anode.
The binder for secondary battery electrodes helps to adhere well to a current collector, a thin film, by binding electrode active material and an electrical conductive material. By adding CMC, the particles of active material and conductive material can be bonded well to each other with minimal adhesion.

This increases the content of electrode active materials, reduces the content of binders, and improves the binding characteristics than PVdF systems to maximize battery capacity and energy density. Also, the SBR particles are represented in point contact unlike PVdF organic binders between the electrode active materials, which can maintain the electrochemical properties of the electrode well.
